Your UK tax checklist when moving to the UK
Your residence status determines how your worldwide income and gains are taxed and is essential tax advice when moving to the UK.
We assess your global income and gains to determine which are taxable and reportable in the UK.
You may be eligible to exempt foreign income from UK tax under the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime or a Double Taxation Agreement.
We help you file all necessary returns and forms in the UK to keep you compliant.
Payments alongside your tax return are due by 31 January. Refunds are paid by HMRC directly into your UK bank account.
Expat Tax Solutions is known for providing individuals with clear, professional tax advice when moving to the UK. We have supported numerous clients with their UK tax obligations including guidance on their tax residence under the Statutory Residence Test, the Foreign Income and Gains regime, and securing valuable credits and exemptions under the UK’s network of Double Taxation Agreements.
" Jacob is fast, structured, and deterministic. He responds quickly, gives clear and definitive answers where the law allows, and doesn't hide behind vague replies. He knew the expat and non-resident space cold — no need to "look into it later." The written advisory memo was clear and actionable, and the tax return was prepared and filed efficiently with minimal back-and-forth. If you're a non-resident, digital nomad, or expat dealing with a complex tax situation, I'd strongly recommend Jacob. He's exactly the kind of advisor you want in your corner. "
" Jacob was extremely helpful in guiding me through an issue with an unexpected tax balance shown on HMRC. His communication skills are excellent, and he was always supportive and responsive. He genuinely helped reduce my stress around tax matters by breaking things down in a very clear and reassuring way. I really appreciate his help and would highly recommend him. "
" Clear advise on pension planning and strategy. Jacob explained everything very clearly with patience. "
" Jacob assisted the two of us with the compilation, preparation and submission of our 2024/5 tax returns. We found his advice sound, concise and clear and would highly recommend Expat Tax Solutions' services. "
" Jacob at Expat Tax Solutions was fantastic helping my mum with her tax return. The service was professional, efficient, and friendly from start to finish. I would highly recommend Jacob and Expat Tax Solutions to anyone needing help with their taxes. "
" I needed to navigate UK tax and do a self-assessment for the first time after moving abroad mid-way through the tax year. He gave me better guidance (preventing me from making mistakes), and from there, the process was simple as can be. Jacob's knowledge and manner were incredibly reassuring. I would absolutely recommend Expat Solutions. "
" Jacob is not only a top-notch tax professional, he's also a genuinely 'nice guy' who goes well beyond just completing a tax return. He thoroughly guided me through my options, and offered valuable advice for planning my next tax year. I highly recommend him! "

When moving to the UK, it’s important to get advice on your UK tax residency status and your exposure to UK tax on your worldwide income and gains. As a new UK tax resident, you may be eligible for the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) Regime or relief under a Double Taxation Agreement.
As a UK tax resident, you are taxable in the UK on your worldwide income and gains; however, you may be eligible to exempt your foreign income and gains under the FIG Regime. Nevertheless, you will still be required to declare your foreign income and gains on your Self Assessment tax return.
Not all individuals are required to file UK tax returns, and this will typically only be the case if you have untaxed income on which UK tax is due, or if you want to claim exemptions and reliefs. If you are required to file, you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October following the end of the tax year and file your return by 31 January following the end of the tax year.
If your income is taxable in the UK and another country, you may be eligible for double taxation relief via a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA). This depends on the nature of the income and whether the UK has a DTA with the country in question.
